Test Details

Synonyms

  • Candida Ag
  • Antigen, Candida

Use

Determine the presence of circulating Candida antigen in patients with disseminated infection prior to the production of Candida antibodies, particularly in immunosuppressed patients. Detection of Candida antigen in serum is highly suggestive of systemic or disseminated candidiasis.

Limitations

A negative test does not exclude the possibility of disseminated Candida infection. Immunocompetent patients may have a negative test result due to presence of an immune complex. False-negative results may occur if the specimen has been heated due to the heat sensitivity nature of the Candida antigen. Rheumatoid factor may cause nonspecific agglutination.

Methodology

Latex agglutination (LA)

Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Serum

Volume

2 mL

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL

Container

Red-top tube or gel-barrier tube.

Causes for Rejection

Unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label; inadequate specimen volume; gross hemolysis; specimen heated or exposed to high temperature; specimen other than serum
