Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), targeting numerical changes associated with 5q, 7q, 8, and 20q.
Indicate pertinent clinical diagnosis and previous cytogenetic studies on the test request form.
3 - 5 days
Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.
Blood, bone marrow, fixed-cell pellet from a cytogenetic analysis, or slides prepared from a cytogenetic analysis
10 mL blood (adult), 3 to 5 mL blood (pediatric), 1 to 3 mL bone marrow, one fixed-cell pellet, or four slides
1 mL blood (adult/pediatric), 1 mL bone marrow, or four slides
Green-top (heparin) tube; pediatric Vacutainer® is optimal or lavender-top (EDTA) tube
Maintain specimen at room temperature.
Broken Vacutainer®; broken slides
Diagnostic test for myelodysplastic syndrome. The principal use is for interphase analysis of cases with no (or low) mitotic activity in cytogenetic analysis or interphase analysis from blood in cases of inaspirable bone marrow. Detection rate is approximately 80% of clones detected in cytogenetic analysis.
