Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), targeting numerical changes associated with 5q, 7q, 8, and 20q.


Special Instructions

Indicate pertinent clinical diagnosis and previous cytogenetic studies on the test request form.

Specimen

Blood, bone marrow, fixed-cell pellet from a cytogenetic analysis, or slides prepared from a cytogenetic analysis


Volume

10 mL blood (adult), 3 to 5 mL blood (pediatric), 1 to 3 mL bone marrow, one fixed-cell pellet, or four slides


Minimum Volume

1 mL blood (adult/pediatric), 1 mL bone marrow, or four slides


Container

Green-top (heparin) tube; pediatric Vacutainer® is optimal or lavender-top (EDTA) tube


Storage Instructions

Maintain specimen at room temperature.


Causes for Rejection

Broken Vacutainer®; broken slides


Test Details


Use

Diagnostic test for myelodysplastic syndrome. The principal use is for interphase analysis of cases with no (or low) mitotic activity in cytogenetic analysis or interphase analysis from blood in cases of inaspirable bone marrow. Detection rate is approximately 80% of clones detected in cytogenetic analysis.
