Hepatitis A Virus (HAV)

Hepatitis A (HAV) remains a significant public health concern, particularly among vulnerable populations. Timely diagnostic testing and immunity screening are essential to identify infection early, inform vaccination decisions, and protect patients and communities.

The public health challenge

HAV continues to cause preventable infection, outbreaks, and serious illness—often in populations with low immunity. Transmission risk is especially high among individuals experiencing homelessness and those with substance use disorders². Appropriate diagnostic testing in symptomatic individuals and immunity assessment when clinically indicated can support timely case identification, guide vaccination decisions, and aid in outbreak response efforts.

~73% of U.S. adults ages 20–39 lack immunity to HAV¹, leaving a large portion of the population susceptible to infection
>44,000 outbreak-associated cases have been reported across 37 states, with hospitalization rates approaching 60% during these outbreaks since 2016².

Testing guidance

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends hepatitis testing for individuals who meet one or more of the following criteria:3

  • Patients presenting with signs or symptoms consistent with viral hepatitis

  • Individuals with known or suspected exposure to hepatitis viruses

  • Patients requiring immunity assessment prior to international travel³
