What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, first identified in late 2019. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets and aerosols and can affect individuals with a wide range of symptoms, from mild illness to severe complications.

Common symptoms may include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of taste or smell. In some cases, individuals may experience prolonged or recurring symptoms, often referred to as Long COVID, which can impact multiple organ systems.

While many individuals recover fully, COVID-19 can lead to serious outcomes, particularly in older adults or those with underlying health conditions. Ongoing testing remains an important tool for identifying infection, guiding treatment decisions, and helping reduce transmission.

COVID-19 signs and symptoms¹

Abnormal body indications of COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus include:

COVID-19 serology (antibody) test

Labcorp offers testing for antibodies against either the spike (S) or nucleocapsid (N) proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

SARS-CoV-2 Semi-Quantitative Total Antibody, Spike

Qualitative and semi-quantitative detection of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor binding domain (RBD). Aid in identifying individuals with an adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2, indicating recent or prior infection. At this time it is unknown how long antibodies persist following infection and if the presence of antibodies confers protective immunity. The performance of this test has not been established in individuals that have received a COVID-19 vaccine. The clinical significance of a positive or negative antibody result following COVID-19 vaccination has not been established and the result from this test should not be interpreted as an indication or degree of protection from infection after vaccination.

SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies, Nucleocapsid

Intended for qualitative detection of total antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein in samples collected on or after 15 days post-symptom onset. The test is intended for use as an aid in indentifying individuals with an adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2, indicating recent or prior infection.

SARS-CoV-2 Semi-Quantitative IgG Antibody, Spike

Qualitative and semi-quantitative detection of IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in human serum and plasma. This assay is intended for use as an aid in identifying individuals with an adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2, indicating recent or prior infection. Samples should only be tested from individuals that are 15 days or more post symptom onset. IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 are generally detectable in blood several days after initial infection, although the duration of time antibodies are present post-infection is not well characterized. Individuals may have detectable virus present for several weeks following seroconversion.

COVID-19, flu & RSV active infection tests

Individuals infected with COVID-19, influenza A/B or RSV often experience similar symptoms of cough, fever, and a runny and/or stuffy nose. Because flu and COVID-19 especially share so many similar symptoms, the CDC advises that patients may need testing to confirm a diagnosis.
