Use
This assay is for the in vitro measurement of specific IgG antibodies against Haemophilus influenzae. Type B (HIB) capsular polysaccharide is present in human serum. HIB is an encapsulated gram-negative bacterium that can cause a wide range of conditions including meningitis, septicemia, cellulitis, epiglottis pneumonia, and septic arthritis. HIB infections are common in children younger than 5 years of age where it is the major source of bacterial meningitis.

Serum antibodies protect against the organism in vitro and protective levels have been established for unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals by radioantigen-binding assays (RABA). EIA antibody measurements correlate to RABA and allow for the selective quantitation of the IgG. Protective antibodies belong to the IgG class, although occasional immune sera with high antibody levels have been shown to contain predominately IgM and IgA.

Methodology
Enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
