Forensic Drug Testing and its Role in Public Safety

This session provides a comprehensive overview of forensic drug testing, tracing its historical evolution and highlighting the scientific and social aspect that have shaped current practices. Participants will explore the origins of toxicological testing, early technological advancements, and the role of forensic laboratories. Building on this foundation, the session examines the critical value of drug testing in promoting public safety,(transportation, workplace, criminal justice, and clinical settings). Attendees will gain an understanding of how timely and accurate toxicology results support risk mitigation, policy development, and informed decision making. The session will also introduce key aspects of driver impairment assessment, including behavioral observations, field sobriety evaluations, and the integration of toxicology findings. Emphasis will be placed on the distinction between drug presence and impairment, along with challenges posed by emerging substances.
