Addressing the threat of measles

Measles remains a public health concern due to its high contagiousness. A single case can lead to transmission among up to 9 out of 10 susceptible individuals.1 Maintaining awareness of possible signs of infection such as cough, rash, runny nose, and red, watery eyes can help support early identification and management. Discussing MMR vaccination with patients remains important, as two doses are estimated to be about 97% effective in preventing measles.

To support timely diagnosis and patient care, Labcorp offers comprehensive measles testing that is available for individuals regardless of vaccination status. The measles testing portfolio is designed to integrate smoothly into existing workflows and provide the insights needed to guide clinical decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can request an MMR titer test or IgG antibody test through your healthcare provider or Labcorp.

IgM antibody and PCR tests are used to confirm active measles infection.

There are no commercially available rapid tests for the diagnosis of measles. PCR provides sensitive and accurate detection of measles infection. Detection of measles infection by PCR is most successful when specimens are collected on the first day of rash onset through the third day, however, the test may also provide a positive result within 10-14 days after rash onset.

Yes, adults can and should get tested, especially before travel or if unsure of vaccination status.

While not routinely recommended, adults may need a booster if they lack immunity. A titer test can help determine this.

It measures the level of antibodies in your blood to confirm immunity.

MMR titers are generally considered valid indefinitely if immunity is confirmed, but some institutions may require periodic retesting.

A combination of IgM antibody and PCR testing provides confirmation. For PCR testing, nasopharyngeal or throat swabs are preferred over urine specimens.
