Test Details

Methodology

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)

Result Turnaround Time

5 - 7 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Use

One numeric result for total anti-Ro is reported. Either anti-Ro52 and/or anti-Ro60 antibodies comprise this result. The presence of anti-Ro antibodies, when considered in conjunction with other laboratory and clinical findings, is an aid in the diagnosis of Sjögren’s Syndrome (SS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM), also known as polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM), and overlap syndromes including mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). Anti-Ro occur in 60% to 90% of primary SS, 30% to 50% of SLE, 10% to 15% SSc, 10% to 25% PM/DM, 10% to 20% of MCTD, 5% to 10% of rheumatoid arthritis and 10% to 15% of autoimmune hepatitis/primary biliary cholangitis. Autoantibodies to either part of the Ro (SS-A) antigen, the 52 kilodalton and/or 60 kilodalton, comprise anti-Ro, total.

Anti-Ro (SS-A) antibodies occur in 40-50% of SLE, 60-75% of primary Sjogren's syndrome (PSS) and in a high proportion of secondary SS whether the associated disease is in SLE, RA, PSS, polydermato-myositis, or primary biliary cirrhosis, but is >90% of subacute cutaneous lupus and in vasculitis-associated SS.

Limitations

This test does not differentiate anti-Ro52 and anti-Ro60 antibodies. Individual measurements of anti-Ro52 and anti-Ro60 (from other assays) will not additively equal this total Ro result. Another test, anti-Ro profile, provides individual results for anti-Ro52 and anti-Ro60. Results should be interpreted in the context of other laboratory and clinical findings. Negative results do not exclude the possibility of autoimmune disease.
