Expected Turnaround Time

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Swab specimen of nares, axilla, torso, rectum, groin in bacterial transport; urine; stool
Volume
One swab from each site, urine culture transport filled to fill line, or fecal culture transport
Container
Bacterial swab transport, urine in urine culture transport, stool in fecal C&S transport vial
Storage Instructions
Maintain specimen at room temperature.
Causes for Rejection
Specimen received without proper identification; inappropriate specimen transport device; unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label; specimen received after prolonged delay (usually more than 72 hours)

Use
Detect colonization of patients and staff in hospitals and nursing homes with vancomycin-resistant enterococci during an outbreak of nosocomial infection
Limitations
This test should not be used to establish diagnosis in case of infection.
