Christos J. Petropoulos, PhD is Vice President R&D, Labcorp-Monogram Biosciences and Vice President, Corporate R&D, LabCorp. Dr. Petropoulos is responsible for all aspects of assay innovation and development at Labcorp-Monogram Biosciences related to virology, oncology, neurology, cell & gene therapy. Dr. Petropoulos joined Monogram Biosciences as the Director of R&D in 1996 shortly after the Company was founded (ViroLogic, Inc.), was named Vice President R&D in 1999 and appointed as Chief Scientific Officer in 2004. In 2011, Dr. Petropoulos also assumed responsibility for the Company’s Clinical Research and Medical Education efforts. Prior to joining Monogram Biosciences, Dr. Petropoulos headed the Molecular Virology Laboratory at Genentech from 1992-1996, as well as the Research Virology Laboratory and the Molecular Detection Laboratory from 1994-1996. Dr. Petropoulos received his PhD in molecular and cell biology from Brown University and trained as a post-doctoral fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Hughes at the NCI Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center, where he was funded by a fellowship from the Leukemia Society of America.
Dr. Petropoulos is a world-recognized expert in antiviral drug resistance and molecular diagnostics and has directed the design, development and launch of more than 20 complex drug resistance assays (PhenoSense®, GenoSure®, Trofile®) that are routinely used to inform HIV-1 and HCV patient treatment decisions in routine clinical settings. Monogram drug resistance assays are widely recognized as industry standards and have been used to support the clinical evaluation of the majority of antiviral drugs that have received FDA approval over the past 20 years. The adaptation of the PhenoSense assay to assess the breadth and potency of neutralizing antibody activity has been leveraged to support vaccine efforts targeting HIV-1, Influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Filovirus (Ebola), and most recently SARS CoV-2.
Dr. Petropoulos is also responsible for biomarker assay development efforts at Monogram Biosciences directed at diagnosis and treatment management of cancer and neurologic disease, disorders and injury. More recently, Dr. Petropoulos established Monogram’s Companion Diagnostic Assay (CDx) program supporting the clinical development and commercialization of emerging gene and cell-based therapies. Dr. Petropoulos has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on 21 funding awards from the NIH/NIAID, CDC and ASPR/BARDA, which include recent BARDA and CDC awards to assess neutralizing antibody levels in response to SARS CoV-2 infection and/or vaccination. Dr. Petropoulos has co-authored over 220 peer-reviewed publications and is a named inventor on 20 US patents.
