What oncologists say is defining cancer care in 2026

04 Feb 2026

Cancer care is advancing rapidly, and with that progress comes new complexity for oncologists.

To better understand the pain points and trends shaping oncology today, we surveyed 152 U.S. oncologists about the realities of practicing in an increasingly complex environment. They point to rising clinical demands, uneven access to innovation, and persistent digital challenges—pressures that are straining care teams, contributing to delays, and influencing care decisions.

Clinicians continue to call for faster test result turnaround times, clearer reporting and better-connected systems so they can spend less time on administrative tasks and more time supporting patients and their families. The findings highlight opportunities for diagnostic partners to simplify care pathways and deliver timely, meaningful insights when they matter most.

Top takeaways

  • 89% say oncology care is becoming more complex
  • 60% cite test time as a top challenge
  • 52% point to insurance coverage as a major barrier
  • 41% struggle with EHR connectivity
  • 75% of hereditary cancer cases involve genetic counselor support
  • 26% say patient support services would set a lab apart
