Dr. Ankala is board-certified in clinical molecular genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). He has over 15 years of combined research and clinical experience in human molecular genetics and clinical diagnostics. Prior to joining Labcorp Genetics (then Invitae) in 2021, Dr. Ankala briefly served as a clinical laboratory director at MNG labs, Labcorp and at EGL Genetics. Dr. Ankala received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from Mississippi State University. He subsequently pursued a post-doctoral fellowship in Human Genetics at Emory University, GA which was funded by a post-doctoral grant awarded by the American Heart Association.
During this fellowship, Dr. Ankala conducted extensive research in understanding the disease mechanism and pathophysiology of neuromuscular disorders. Eventually, Dr. Ankala completed his clinical molecular genetics fellowship at Emory University and joined their diagnostic lab as its Director of Research and Development. He also served as Assistant Professor of Human Genetics and as Program Director for the ABMGG Fellowship program at Emory University. His expertise includes clinical test development and validation, neuromuscular disease diagnostics, hereditary cancer diagnostics and RNA sequencing.
Over the years, Dr. Ankala has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed manuscripts that include research reports, review articles, editorials and book chapters. Dr. Ankala enjoys teaching and training fellow and future molecular geneticists and takes pride in providing high quality interpretation of genetic results.
