Career Spotlight on Data Management

Three Labcorp Employees Share Their Unique Journeys and Experiences

What does it take to become a clinical data professional? How can you find support, growth and balance in your work? Meet three people from our Drug Development team at Labcorp, and read on as they share about their experiences working in data management roles.

Meet Eva, Principal Data Manager

“I work remotely, but I’m never alone. I have a really good team...”

With more than 25 years of experience in data management, Eva finds that she is well supported by her team and management at Labcorp.

“I work remotely, but I’m never alone,” Eva said. “I have a really good team that shares with each other, and my manager is always available if I have any questions. She keeps up with our next set of deliverables and is always there as a backup when I need some time off.”

Balancing work and life and being able to adjust her schedule is important to Eva. Even after two promotions, to Clinical Manager I in 2019 and Principal Data Manager earlier this year, Eva has been able to maintain a personal commitment to serving her community.

“Outside of my job, I’m very involved with my ministry, where I’ve volunteered at the food pantry, helped drive elderly people to their doctor’s appointments, and visited with them to provide companionship,” she shared. “It’s so rewarding to be able to help people and see smiles light up on their faces.”

Similar to her ministry work, Eva is motivated by Labcorp’s mission to improve the health and lives of others. And she can see how her work supporting clinical studies as a data manager fits in to that mission.

“Our work gives us a sense of pride…more drugs or treatments will become available in the future because we all are pursuing those answers. That makes me very happy to be part of it.”

Meet Jim, Clinical Data Coordinator

“I feel honored that I was chosen to work on something that is now used to help people around the world as we try to beat the pandemic.”

Since beginning his Labcorp journey in 2008, Jim has discovered that working for Labcorp gives him a unique opportunity he wouldn’t find at any other contract research organization (CRO).

“We have such a big scope of work that gives our employees more opportunities to pursue,” said Jim. “As a data manager, I got to understand at a very granular level how data comes in and how we need to provide the data to the sponsor in the correct format, so they can see how their study has been trending. Now, as a clinical data coordinator, I work with the [clinical research] sites to make sure they are working with data according to the protocol. It’s nice to see both sides of the coin and understand the whole picture of data transfer.”

Jim has been able to gain diverse exposure in various projects involving pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, microbiology, human antibodies – and even a study on bone growth. And last year, he got to participate in studies focused on COVID-19 drug development.

“About a year ago, I supported a study for evaluating one of the potential drugs for COVID-19,” Jim said. “I loved working on that project as it was one of the first studies that showed benefits to patients with COVID-19. It was endlessly fascinating, and I feel honored that I was chosen to work on something that is now used to help people around the world as we try to beat the pandemic. To be a part of that project was incredible.”

Meet Nadine, Clinical Analytics Team Manager

“[Mentorship] significantly improved our team’s culture, and I recognize how privileged we are to have so much support.”

Nadine initially questioned whether she’d thrive in data management when, early in her career, she discovered how much patience and perseverance it took to examine the details and ensure accuracy.

“I remember someone telling me, ‘When a good data manager sees an error message, he or she will find the inner enthusiasm in order to provide a solution,’” she said. “I doubted whether I would be a good fit for the data management role.”

However, as Nadine started acclimating to the structured, systematic approach of the data management professional, she began to embrace her role, its challenges, and the opportunities. Her appreciation for data management evolved, and Nadine moved ahead to become a senior project data manager before advancing into her current role as team manager. She credits her line manager as a role model for career development.

“I had a great line manager who continuously made efforts to develop the entire team, organized a training for new hires, and also customized a mentorship program for our group. The initiative significantly improved our team’s culture, and I recognize how privileged we are to have so much support.”
