Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Serum, frozen

Volume

1 mL

Minimum Volume

0.1 mL

Container

Red-top tube or gel-barrier tube

Collection

Separate serum from cells. Transfer specimen to a plastic transport tube before freezing. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.

Storage Instructions

Freeze prior to transport. Samples may be stored at 2°C to 8°C for seven days prior to testing.

Causes for Rejection

Hemolysis; heating specimen for thawing may give false-positive results, avoid repeated thawing and freezing.

Test Details

Use

Monitor immune complex disease (ie, lupus, glomerulonephritis, serum hepatitis, arthritis, vasculitis); monitor progress of some malignancies

Methodology

Enzyme immunoassay (EIA)

Reference Interval

• Negative: <4.4 μg Eq/mL

• Equivocal: 4.4−10.7 μg Eq/mL

• Positive: >10.7 μg Eq/mL

Additional Information

Circulating immune complexes can be demonstrated in rheumatic, infectious, and neoplastic diseases, as well as most immunologically mediated illnesses (inflammatory bowel disease, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura). The 1981 WHO/IUIS survey of laboratory tests in clinical immunology concluded that the detection of circulating immune complexes is not essential to any specific diagnosis.
