Bacterial Stool Pathogens (Salmonella sp, Shigella sp, Campylobacter sp, E coli [STEC]), NAA
Campylobacter sp; E coli (STEC); Salmonella sp; Shigella sp
Determine the presence of bacterial pathogens in the stool of patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.
This test detects C jejuni and C coli but does not differentiate between these two species of Campylobacter. Antibiotic susceptibility testing is not performed since bacterial isolates are not generated by this methodology.
Nucleic acid amplification (NAA)
1 C&S vial (Para-Pak orange)
Remove cap and place approximately 1 gram of the raw stool into the transport medium or a sufficient amount to bring the liquid level up to the "fill to here" line. Replace cap and tighten. Agitate the vial to permit adequate mixing of the specimen with the transport medium. When mixing is completed, the solution should appear homogeneous.
Maintain specimen at room temperature for five days or refrigerated for 14 days. Do not freeze.
Causes for Rejection
Raw stool; inappropriate specimen transport device; specimen beyond stated stability; frozen specimen; specimens with incorrect or missing patient information; specimen in expired transports
Standard stool collection and handling procedures are appropriate to obtain liquid or soft raw stool. Specimens must be collected into a sterile screw-cap container and then transferred into the C&S transport vial with Cary Blair medium (Para-Pak® orange) within two hours of collection.
