Test Details

Test Includes

A culture will be performed if not initially requested for S pneumoniae antigen-negative CSF specimens (per the College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines)

Use

Detect bacterial antigens in CSF and urine specimens. Per the College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines, a reflex culture will be performed if not initially requested for antigen-negative CSF specimens.

Limitations

May be negative in early meningitis. Does not replace Gram stain and culture. The sensitivity of the tests vary from 50% to 100% depending on the specificity of the antibody and the concentration of antigen in the specimen. This test was most useful for the detection of serious H influenzae infection. Because of the availability of vaccine, this test is of extremely limited value. Testing is not recommended for persons who have received the Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine within the previous five days (false-positive reaction).

Methodology

Latex agglutination (LA); immunochromatographic membrane assay (S pneumoniae only); bacterial culture for negative CSF specimens.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Urine (random), or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

Volume

10 mL urine or 1 mL CSF

Container

Sterile plastic urine container or sterile plastic tube (CSF)

Storage Instructions

Refrigerate.

Causes for Rejection

Quantity not sufficient for analysis; inappropriate specimen source; inappropriate specimen collection device; specimen stability exceeded; name discrepancy between the name on the specimen container and name in the computer or on the test request form; hemolysis; lipemia; gross bacterial contamination

Clinical Information

Special Instructions

This assay is used for urine or CSF specimens. To submit serum, order test 006890.
