Holter

The Need

Holter monitoring is a basic, noninvasive tool for evaluating and managing cardiac symptoms. Two leads of electrocardiography are continuously recorded over a 24- to 48-hour period. The data provides an in-depth representation of a patient's cardiac condition during routine activities of work, sleep, and exercise.

Once collected, the ECG tracing is analyzed to identify a wide array of physiological events: disturbances in the electrical conduction of the heart, myocardial changes associated with ischemia and infarction, evaluation of treatment and drug therapies, and assessment of pacemaker and internal defibrillator function.

AMS provides physicians the benefits of Holter monitoring in a service that is convenient, timely, and cost-effective.

The Procedure and Analysis

The Holter monitor is worn by the patient for 24 to 48 hours. The ECG tracing is collected in two channels and is recorded on a cassette tape. The patient completes a Patient Diary and documents significant events that occurred while wearing the monitor.

When the cassette is returned to LabCorp, it is scanned and interpreted using the Reynolds Holter analyzer. All Holter reports are reviewed by staff analysts; analyst accuracy and proficiency are maintained by LabCorp's quality control program.

The Report

Results, normally available within 24 hours of receipt of the Holter tape, can be sent to the physician via facsimile, telephone, or electronic data transfer. Original reports are returned via first-class mail or LabCorp courier. Cardiology consultants are available for report confirmation. View a sample report.
