Criminal Cases
LabCorps forensic DNA analyses are available where biological evidence has been left at the scene or transferred from one item and/or person to another.
Forensic Parentage
LabCorps forensic DNA analyses are available for cases where the identity of a parent is in question as a result of a criminal act (eg, pregnancy resulting from assault or incest or abandoned babies with uncertain maternity). The evidentiary items submitted in these cases are often products of conception (aborted fetal material) or reference blood samples.
Reverse Paternity
LabCorp also analyzes forensic cases where evidentiary items need to be connected to an individual for whom no reference sample is available. These may be the result of homicide where no body has been recovered, but where blood stains have been located at the crime scene. In these cases, LabCorp uses a reference sample from at least one parent to perform a reverse paternity test for purposes of linking identity.
Specimen Matching
Specimen matching cases are not necessarily connected to crimes. In these cases, LabCorp is requested to confirm the source of a sample. Typical specimen matching cases include:
- a urine drug screen that has been reported as positive for a substance of abuse
- biopsy samples from a physicians office or hospital to verify that the sample has been taken from a particular patient.
All cases must be accepted by LabCorps forensic laboratory.
If a case is accepted, a transportation kit, along with the appropriate chain-of-custody documentation, is provided to the submitting agency. The evidence is returned to the submitting agency on completion of the results and interpretations. If required, expert testimony is available.
