Synonyms | | Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Real-Time PCR ; Panel
Epstein-Barr (EBV), Qualitative, by PCR |
Specimen | | Whole blood, bone marrow, plasma, serum, cerebrospinal
fluid (CSF), bronchial wash or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) |
Volume | | 5 mL whole blood or bone marrow, 1 mL serum or plasma,
0.5 mL CSF (non-centrifuged) or 1 mL bronchial wash or BAL |
Minimum Volume | | 1 mL whole blood or bone marrow, 0.2 mL serum or plasma,
0.2 mL CSF (non-centrifuged) or 0.2 mL bronchial wash or BAL |
Container | | Lavender-top (EDTA) tube, yellow-top (ACD) tube, bronchial
wash or BAL, red-top tube, gel-barrier tube or sterile
container - CSF |
Collection | | Serum or plasma must be separated from cells within 45 - 60
minutes of venipuncture. Send serum or plasma in a plastic
transport tube. |
Storage Instructions | | Maintain whole blood or bone marrow at room temperature;
CSF, freeze; refrigerate serum, plasma or
BAL/bronchial wash
Stability:
Whole blood or bone marrow: Room temperature up to 7
days
CSF: Room temperature, refrigerated or frozen up to 7
days
Serum, plasma or BAL/bronchial wash: Room temperature or
refrigerated up to 7 days |
Causes for Rejection | | Quantity not sufficient for analysis; specimen grossly
contaminated; specimen too old; leaking or broken tube |
| Use | | This test method uses real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify and detect DNA. This test detects EBV DNA in whole blood or in the WBC fraction. EBV is the etiological agent of the infectious mononucleosis and has been implicated in African Burkitt lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. |
| Methodology | | Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with real-time detection |
