Use
This test method uses enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the qualitative screening of serum for antibodies against Echinococcus.
Limitations
This procedure may be considered by Medicare and other carriers as investigational and, therefore, may not be payable as a covered benefit for patients.
Methodology
Enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
Additional Information
Antibody response is highly variable with respect to cyst location and individual response. If a current infection is suspected, it is suggested that a convalescent serum sample be submitted in 3-5 weeks. All positive serology samples should be confirmed using a more specific test method (CDC) due to cross-reactivity with Taenia solium (cysticercosis).
